One afternoon, a buddy of mine invited me to the movies (his treat) and so I went along. We went to see this movie, Stigmata, and I had not seen any previews so I didn't know what kind of flick it was. If I had known it was a Rated R (Exorcist-style) horror flick, I don't think I would have agreed to go. But as it turned out, I was surprised at the very positive message in the movie; that God's Kingdom is not manifested in temples of wood and stone. The movie's message is actually pro-Jesus without being pro-Organized Religion. That doesn't mean that all of the theology is correct, but if you can look past some of these drawbacks, there are elements of inspiration in the film. The movie is about a girl by the name of Frankie who is non-religious. There is also a priest by the name of Andrew who is commissioned by the Catholic Church to investigate "miracles" (like weeping satues of the Virgin Mary) and debunk them. When this girl, Frankie (who is not a "Christian"), is touched by the Stigmata (something that Catholics believe only happens by the will of God himself to the very religious), the Catholic Church sends off Andrew to see what's behind this. What ensues is a massive conspiracy by the Organized Church to hide the message that God does not need mansions of wood and stone, but He exists all around us and can interact with whomever He wishes and through any means He so desires. Through this process of experiencing the Stigmata (the wounds of Christ in her flesh), Frankie goes from a pure atheist to believing in God. There are some great moments of dialogue in the movie and so I have highlighted those here on this page. If you can handle darker movies like this, you might be interested, but otherwise you can just watch these clips. They are much milder but contain the main positive messages from the movie. Enjoy!
